"Yes, I know there's some pain here short-term," North Las Vegas City Councilman Isaac Barron, who represents Ward 1, told FOX5 in early October. "The best part is, once we've done this work here, we're not gonna need to tear up the streets for dozens of years."
That short-term pain is on the stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard North that runs past City Hall, from East Tonopah Avenue to East Carey Avenue. FOX5 reported that traffic through the work zone was down to one lane in each direction, and the employees and owners it interviewed said customers were staying away. The boulevard is still open to traffic, and so is everything on it. A coffee drive-thru, a movie theater, a casino coffee shop, a public library and a burger counter are all still running along that half-mile. The only thing that changed is how you get to them, and the route depends on the clock and on how you're traveling.
The Project Runs on Two Different Clocks
According to the City of North Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Boulevard North Improvement Project started Monday, April 6, 2026. It covers upgraded storm drainage, modernized underground utilities and new pavement between Tonopah and Carey. RTC of Southern Nevada and the Clark County Regional Flood Control District are paying the $38 million cost. FOX5's report adds new water and sewer lines and pedestrian safety updates to the scope.
The city lists normal construction hours as 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The bus detours run on a different schedule. RTC lists the Route 113 reroute as a 24-hour detour "until further notice" in both directions.
| What | Schedule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Normal crew hours | 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday | City of North Las Vegas |
| Route 113 bus detour | 24 hours, until further notice | RTC of Southern Nevada |
| Overall project length | About 18 months from April 6, 2026 | City of North Las Vegas |
The city's start-of-work notice doesn't give a completion month. Counting 18 months from April 6 lands at roughly fall 2027. On that estimate, the work zone will still be in place through the coming holiday season and into next year.
Tonopah to Carey, Door by Door
The addresses climb as you head north, so here is the corridor in order, starting just south of the work zone and ending at the Carey intersection where FOX5 did its reporting.
- Jerry's Nugget Casino, 1821 Las Vegas Blvd North. It sits at the southern approach, near the Tonopah end. Its dining side has Jerry's Famous Coffee Shop, Jerry's Snack Bar and Jerry's Nugget Bakery. The Jerry's Nugget homepage also lists bingo, keno, live table games, a William Hill Race & Sports Book and free parking. RTC's temporary northbound bus stop sits on N. 5th Street, right before the driveway for the Jerry's Nugget parking lot, so the casino is easy to reach from the detour side.
- Maya Cinemas North Las Vegas, 2195 N. Las Vegas Blvd. This is the corridor's evening anchor. The theater's pricing page lists a $7 Tuesday Family Day and a $7 Wednesday Senior Day, plus matinee, student and military rates. Ticket deals change, so check the current price before you go.
- Dutch Bros Coffee, 2245 N. Las Vegas Blvd. This is the drive-thru in the middle of the cone zone.
- North Las Vegas City Hall and the North Las Vegas Library, 2250 Las Vegas Blvd North. The library is on the first floor of the City Hall building.
- 7-Eleven, 2325 Las Vegas Blvd. N.
- Farmer Boys, 2341 N. Las Vegas Blvd. It's on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Carey Avenue.
FOX5 spoke with three of these businesses, Dutch Bros, 7-Eleven and Farmer Boys, and all three said business was down because of the cone zone. FOX5 reported a drop in business at all three. It did not report a closure.
The Bus Rider's Map Has Moved a Block West
Drivers mostly deal with a narrower road. Route 113 riders are dealing with different streets entirely. RTC's posted detour sends buses around the work zone on N. 5th Street and Carey Avenue.
- Northbound: After Owens Avenue, the bus takes the roundabout toward N. 5th Street, runs up 5th, turns right on Carey Avenue, then turns left back onto Las Vegas Boulevard.
- Southbound: After Magnet Street, the bus turns right on Carey, left on N. 5th Street, then takes the roundabout after Tonopah Avenue back onto Las Vegas Boulevard.
The stops in the zone have closed in stages. The first group closed on April 8, more on June 14, and one more on October 8. RTC's stop-closure list, last updated October 22, shows where each one went:
| Closed stop | Closed since | Where to wait instead |
|---|---|---|
| NB Las Vegas after Bruce | June 14, 2026 | Temporary sign on the first light pole after Carey |
| NB Las Vegas after Tonopah | June 14, 2026 | Temporary sign on N. 5th Street before the Jerry's Nugget parking lot driveway |
| NB Las Vegas before Civic Center | April 8, 2026 | Temporary sign on the first light pole after Carey |
| NB Las Vegas before Carey | April 8, 2026 | Temporary sign on the first light pole after Carey |
| SB Las Vegas after Hamilton | June 14, 2026 | Temporary sign after Salt Lake St., under the "Right turn lane must turn right" sign |
| SB Las Vegas after Carey | April 8, 2026 | Same temporary stop after Salt Lake St. |
| SB Las Vegas after Civic Center | April 8, 2026 | Same temporary stop after Salt Lake St. |
| SB Las Vegas before Tonopah | October 8, 2026 | Stop ID 1284, southbound before Foremaster |
The newest closure is the October 8 change at Tonopah. If your usual stop is at the south end of the zone, walk to Foremaster now. Before you head out, check the RTC bus stop closures list and its alerts and detours page, since stops in an active work zone can move again without much notice.
The Free Calendar Inside the Work Zone
The City Hall building is in the middle of the project, but the library's program schedule is still running. The city calendar lists Lego Club on Monday, November 30, from 4 to 5 p.m. at 2250 Las Vegas Blvd North. It's free and open to kids ages 5 to 11. The December calendar also lists Study Hall at the City Hall Library on December 2, 9 and 16.
Lego Club starts at 4 p.m., which lines up with the end of the city's normal construction day. Maya Cinemas' $7 Tuesday and Wednesday deals are on weeknights, when crews are scheduled to be off. Saturdays and Sundays fall outside the crews' normal schedule entirely.
Why the Street Is Open Now
Much of the work is underground: storm drainage, utilities, and water and sewer lines. The Clark County Regional Flood Control District is one of the two funders. Barron's point was about the long run. He told FOX5 that "within the next 5 to 10 years, you won't even recognize this place," and city officials told the station the upgrades should help spur redevelopment once they're done.
The businesses are dealing with the short run. FOX5 asked whether the city had help available for affected businesses. Barron said he wasn't sure the city had set anything aside, and he asked for patience. On the city's 18-month estimate, that leaves about a year of construction. The coffee shop at 2245, the burger counter at 2341, the theater at 2195 and the casino at 1821 are all reachable from the N. 5th Street side or after the 4 p.m. end of the crews' day.
